Sunscreen and a pigment-correcting serum solve two different problems, and using only one of them is why a lot of people feel stuck. Sunscreen stops new damage. It does nothing to fade the sun spots, uneven texture, or redness you already have — that needs a separate, targeted active, used consistently, with the sunscreen still on top every single day so you're not creating new damage while treating the old.

What actually treats existing sun spots

Eucerin Even Pigment Perfector Illuminating Serum targets exactly this — melanin that's already there, not melanin you're trying to prevent. La Roche-Posay Mela B3 Niacinamide Serum works the same angle more gently, suited to daily long-term use. SKIN1004 Centella Tone Brightening Ampoule is the calmer option if your skin is reactive alongside the discoloration, which is common with sun damage since UV causes redness and uneven tone together.

Sun damage isn't just spots

UV exposure also breaks down collagen and roughens surface texture over years, separate from the visible dark spots. If your main sun-related concern is a change in facial contour and firmness rather than tone, that's a different page — see Anti-Aging & Wrinkles. Retinoids address both texture and pigmentation from sun exposure at once; see Retinol.

Not every dark spot is sun damage

If your marks are shaped like a breakout that's healed, or clustered on the cheeks and upper lip in a mask-like pattern, that's more likely post-acne marks or melasma than pure photodamage — different triggers, and melasma in particular needs a different, more cautious approach since some actives can worsen it. See Dark Spots & Pigmentation for those other causes.

The sunscreen you still need underneath all of this

Whatever you use to treat existing spots, it only holds if you're also stopping new ones. Beauty of Joseon Sun Relief and La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Air are the two most reliable daily options. See Sunscreens for the full range.

Questions people actually ask

Will sunscreen fade my existing sun spots?

No — sunscreen prevents new UV damage, it doesn't reverse pigment that's already formed. You need both: sunscreen to stop it getting worse, a pigment-correcting active to fade what's there.

What's the difference between sun damage and melasma or acne marks?

Sun damage tends to be scattered, irregular spots on consistently exposed areas — the face, backs of hands, chest. Melasma is more symmetrical and mask-like, often linked to hormones. Acne marks follow the shape of a healed breakout. See Dark Spots & Pigmentation if yours sounds like either of the latter two.

Can retinol help with sun damage too?

Yes — retinoids improve both the pigmentation and the texture and fine lines that come from cumulative UV exposure, which makes them one of the more efficient additions if sun damage is your main concern. See Retinol.

How long does it take to fade a sun spot?

Realistically two to four months of consistent use, and progress stalls or reverses if sunscreen isn't worn daily throughout — that's the single biggest reason people feel like it's "not working."
