Blackheads & Whiteheads: The Salicylic Acid Fix
The internet's favourite way to deal with a blackhead is still two fingers and a mirror. It's also the fastest way to turn one small clogged pore into a red, swollen mark that takes a week to calm down. The actual fix is quieter and slower, and it's been sitting in an unassuming bottle of salicylic acid the whole time.
What's actually stuck in there
A blackhead and a whitehead are the same clog — oil and dead skin cells trapped in a pore. The only difference is exposure to air: a blackhead sits open at the surface, so the trapped sebum oxidizes and darkens, while a whitehead stays sealed under a thin layer of skin and shows up as a small white bump instead. Neither is dirt, which is why scrubbing harder doesn't solve it.
Why salicylic acid works where scrubs don't
Salicylic acid (a BHA) is oil-soluble, which means it can travel inside an oil-filled pore and dissolve the buildup from the inside — something a water-based scrub simply can't do. Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant has built its reputation on exactly this mechanism; it's been named one of WWD's "Top 100 Skin Care Products of All Time" and remains a global bestseller for good reason. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution works the same active into a lighter, more affordable everyday format. If a leave-on serum feels like too much too soon, Cosrx Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser introduces the same ingredient at the cleansing step, which is gentle enough for daily use from day one.
Pads and pore strips do something different
Medicube Zero Pore Pads combine 0.45% BHA with 4.5% AHA on a dual-textured pad, and clinical testing behind the product showed a 47.1% drop in sebum and an 87.3% reduction in visible pore congestion with regular use — useful as a toning step that both exfoliates and physically buffs the skin. A clay mask works on a completely different principle: it doesn't exfoliate at all, it just pulls oil and debris out of the pore as it dries. Medicube Zero Pore Blackhead Mud Mask uses five clay types plus AHA/BHA/PHA in a three-to-five-minute mask, with testing showing measurable pore size reduction within two weeks — a reasonable once-or-twice-a-week addition alongside a daily BHA step, not a replacement for it.
If it's red or sore, that's a different problem
A blackhead or whitehead is congestion, not infection — it shouldn't hurt or look inflamed. A spot that's red, swollen, or tender is an active breakout, which responds better to something built to calm inflammation, like La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo +M. See Acne & Blemishes for that side of the routine.
Common questions
Is it ever okay to extract a blackhead by hand?
Only after the pore has been softened, ideally with steam or a warm cloth, and even then gently. Pressing on unprepared skin is what causes the bruising and inflammation people are usually trying to avoid in the first place.
How often should I use a BHA?
Daily is fine for most people once skin has adjusted, starting every other day for the first one to two weeks if it's new to your routine.
Do I need a BHA and a clay mask, or just one?
They cover different jobs — the BHA prevents new congestion, the clay mask pulls out what's already there. Using both, at different points in the week, covers more ground than either alone.
